I study the histories of institutions of social control, combining sociological approaches to social problems, crime, and culture. I ask: how are social problems identified and acted upon collectively? How do institutions of social control intersect with science, politics, ideology, and emotion? 

My dissertation investigated the emotional politics of legislation which responds to intense media coverage and public outrage following sensational incidents violence. In the past I have researched the spatial concentration of urban public health crises, the application of clinical science to social problems by philanthropic organizations, and professional discourses of data science among social service nonprofits.
